Tenn. jail sells e-cigarette to inmates

LAFAYETTE, Tenn. (WHAS11) -- A jail in Tennessee has come up with a unique way to make money, by selling electronic cigarettes to inmates.

Smoking is no longer allowed inside the Macon County Jail in Lafayette, so the jail is selling a new kind of e-cigarette made especially for use behind bars.
Unlike the ones you can buy, these can't be recharged.
Inmates get about 500 puffs before they have to buy a new one at a cost of $13.50.

Sheriff Mark Gammons hopes the jail will see a profit.
"Hope I can make $45 thousand a year and that profit will be turned in to help pay these guards for being understaffed, underpaid," Sheriff Gammons, said.

He said it's not just about money but cigarettes are one of the hottest items inmates try to sneak into the jail, so with the e-cigarette program, the jail can control which inmate gets their Nicotine fix and when.
E-cigarette use will only be allowed in certain areas of the jail.
