Coils 101: The Parallel Coil Build & How It Can Enhance Your Regular Vape

 

So you’ve come to the point in your vape game where you’ve taken the time to study up on coil building, you’ve done the proper research on Ohm’s Law and Battery Safety and have been happy with your standard micro coil builds. But now you feel like it’s time to move on to something a little more advanced, nothing too fancy, but a build that can give you even more vapor production and one that has a bit more warmth and throat hit.

This tutorial has the user building a sub ohm parallel coil build. Sub ohm coils and building is for advanced vapers ONLY and should not be attempted by a user who has not done the proper research on Ohm’s Law and battery safety. Supplies Needed:

 

Ohmmeter

Choice of RDA (one with post holes big enough to accommodate 2 threads of Kanthal wire)

24 Gauge Nichrome 80

1/8th drill bit or Coiler Jig (for easier wrapping)

Wicking Material (We recommend Japanese Organic Cotton)

Wire Cutters or Nail Clippers

Ceramic Tipped Tweezers

Mech Mod or Sub Ohm Capable Device

Screwdriver

 

Let’s Build!

 

1. Cut a long strand of your Nichrome 80 wire at least 12 inches long.

2. Bend the wire in half so both sides are equal in length and touch each other.

3. Take your drill bit or Coiler Jig and start wrapping (take your time in order to keep it neat and as tight as possible).

4. Keep wrapping until you’ve made 5 even wraps.

5. Leave the drill bit in and line it up with your atomizer’s posts.

6. Insert the leads into your posts and place the coil close to the posts, but not touching (otherwise you risk a short).

7. Secure the screws into the posts to lock your coil into place.

8. Once secure, gently pull your drill bit up and a little bit away from the deck and posts, this will help tighten your coils. At this point you can check for any overlap or spacing you’ve missed.

9. If you like where the coil is sitting and it looks even, throw it onto your ohmmeter to check its resistance. This tutorial only calls for 1 coil to be built and should read at around 0.3-0.4 ohms.

10. If it reads correctly, cut off the excess length of your leads and attach to your mod / device of choice.

11. Fire your coils and check for hot spots. Use your tweezers to compress them until they fire evenly, the red heating from the middle of the coil and out.

12. Check your resistance one more time for good measure. If it fires correctly, pop it back onto your mod.

13. Wick your coil with your choice of wicking material.

14. Prime with your favorite e-liquid & Vape on with that huge cloud production!

 

So Why Is A Parallel Coil Build Better Than A Standard Micro Coil?

 

Simply put, there is just more wire and more surface area on a parallel coil than on a standard micro coil, because well you’re using double the coils. With that in mind, theoretically a single parallel coil should equal the same performance as a dual micro coil build. But most vapers will prefer a single parallel coil to dual micro coils because you only need to build one coil and you will still get a warm vape with impressive cloud production.

If you know what you are doing and are comfortable with vaping at a lower ohm rating, you can always make two parallel coils, which will bring your resistance down to fire at around 0.15-0.2 ohms. At this range, we suggest that only experienced builders build and vape at this rating and as always it is at your own risk. Make sure you know your device and especially your batteries well before attempting a dual parallel build.

Use only top quality high drain capable batteries from reputable manufacturers and ones that can handle this type of high drain situation. Vaping, like all things in life is never 100% safe, but knowing what you are doing and knowing what your devices can handle will always make your experience a little safer.
